Hamilton – On January 20, federal funding of $950,000 was announced to support the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s (AGH) major expansion project, a boost welcomed by local leaders including Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas MP John-Paul Danko.

The funds, provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, were revealed by Hamilton Mountain MP Lisa Hepfner on behalf of the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture. Danko joined fellow MPs and Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath at the press conference to mark the investment, which will kick-start the first phase of renovations at the downtown cultural institution.

The project includes a four-story extension, a new front entrance and expanded gallery space, increasing exhibition capacity by around 70 per cent to allow more of the Gallery’s renowned collection to be displayed and enjoyed.

“This investment helps ensure the AGH continues to be a vibrant hub for arts and culture,” Danko said, noting the gallery’s contributions to community life and the local economy.

The expansion also opens discussions about innovative uses of the site, including potentially incorporating affordable housing to support artists and creative professionals — a first-of-its-kind idea in Canada.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton, established in 1914, is the largest art museum in southwestern Ontario and plays a central role in the region’s cultural landscape.
